Investigating social acceptance of modern breeding techniques

Researchers Paul Nales and Arnout Fischer at Wageningen University have conducted 6 focus groups to identify consumer perceptions towards multiple breeding techniques ranging from natural breeding towards advanced techniques such as CRISPR-CAS. The focus groups were conducted in Italy, Czech Republic and the Netherlands. In the focus groups they studied the associations, likes and dislikes consumers had with novel breeding techniques. In addition, they looked at consumer views regarding breeding techniques that can help inform plant breeders for further development. Our ambition is to gain better understanding in the psychological drivers behind both consumer acceptance and (possible) rejection.
